Abstract
The purpose of this paper is about the effect of reading while listening instrument music and Listening song . Studies
in listening music, its a interest method which can improve reading ability.
Sometimes,The student only can focus to their materials if they are reading
compherension while listening music. Many experiment in another journal show
that in reading while listening instrumental music train the student
performance to do their tasks in carefully. The
highlights showed the different between the
attetion and concentration in reading in listening genres of music especially in music classical (instrumental music). The result
of this study is showed the impact on music while reading with a higher
intensity is more effective just than
without background music.
Key Words: Listening
Instrumental (Classic), Listening song, The comparison between Listening
Instrumental and Listening Song
Introduction
We choose this
title because we see a lot of students always listening music while reading and
we want to know what’s the effect. Studies on the effects of background media
on the learner’s reading performance is an important area to study in some
parts of the world because it is a common trend for many students to have activities
such as reading with listening hiphop and classical (instrument music) in the
background while they are concentrating on their reading. For that
reason, one of objectives in this study is Effect Comparison Between
Listening Instrumental (Classic) and Listening Song While
Reading.
Research
study Music is used to extract attention the participant in study. The student
reading with listening 2 genres music. But
there are experiments that the experts has done relating to listening music
while study especially in reading.
It showed that
playing music such as hip-hop music in the background has a greater effect on
the concentration during the reading comprehension task when compared to light
classical music. However, it was surprising to find that the control group performed
better than the classical music group. Perhaps it was because the melodies in
the light classical music that the participants heard became a form of
distraction. However, this was still in accordance with the original hypothesis
and with the idea that music that is perceived as distracting will affect task
performance and concentration”. (Peter
Tze – Ming Chou, 10).
The
effects of listening to different types of music while taking a reading
comprehension test were measured and compared to a negative control of no
music. (Alexander, Firouzbakht, Glennon, Lang). A
variety of research has been conducted on the effects of different types of
music on cognitive abilities. Many of these studies are based upon the Mozart
Effect, which claims that listening to classical music has an advantage over
other types of music on learning. (Laurel Harmon, Taryn Pickwick, 2008).
According
to a study done by Furnham and Bradley (2002), background music can have a
negative effect on the performance of complex cognitive tasks.
Review of literature
Several studies have found that many students today are immersed with
media technology and this leads to the problem of how well students can study.
In a paper presented at the National Media Education Conference, Ballard (2003
p.3).
One-third of the students reported that they talk on the phone, instant
message, watch television, listen to the radio or music, or surf the internet
for fun while they are doing homework (Azzam, 2006 p.3).
The term music reading is used for the act of decoding the symbols of
staff notation using a musical instrument (Wolf, 1976).
Students of all ages use different study methods to maximize their studying, each preferring their own technique. Some students listen to a specific music type while studying, while others can only study if there is complete silence. Here we will compare the Securities comparison of inflicted from 2 Namely, musical instruments and music.
A.
Listening
Instrumental (Classic) while Reading.
Research shows that listening to music while
reading will cause a lot of positive effects.
1. Listen to classical music can be helped children learn more longer and absorb more information hearts reading.
2. Variation melody and tone on classical music that creates conditions conducive when children reading.
3. Some studies prove that music can be helped Andari focused mind. The same thing can be applied Andari when reading a book, learn, or when considering something. Andari can practices research singer showed to Andari Andari with or kids how to play music while they learn.
4. The part of the brain used for reading book review differ part of the brain which are used for the review to listen to instrumental music. because of that, listening to instrumental music which does not interfere with activities reading books (Jim Taylor).
5. A study proves orangutan Frequently listen to music also instrumental hearts will focus any more circumstances including reading.
B.
Listening Song while Reading
According to Clifford Nass, a communications expert from Stanford University , it is because
a part of the brain used to listen to the song lyrics together with parts of the brain used to
process the word (read). This means that when you are learning (reading) while listening to a
song , your brain trying to process two things at the same time , such as listening and
interpreting lyrics , and your reading comprehension. As a result, your understanding of the
readings was inhibited by the duty to interpret the lyrics.
There was a experiment. They divide into 2 groups. The first group is instrument group and the second group is hip hop music. The first group listened to music with a mixture of string and wind ensembles, vocal and piano music. And The second group listen CD that was used in this study was a selection of songs from a CD album entitled Best Hip Hop - The Collection. This CD contained many of the most popular Hip Hop songs produced in 2006. Reviews These consisted mainly of fast songs or up-beat rhythms and tempos. The CD alternated randomly between male and female artists such as The Black Eyed Peas, The Pussycat Dolls, Nelly Furtado, 50 Cent, just to name a few. A one way factorial ANOVA was used to analyze the results for the research questions whether on different types of background music, especially light classical music and hip hop music, have an effect on concentration during a reading comprehension task. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA).
The
mean score for the classical music group was 64.41 with a standard deviation of
14 019. However, the mean score for hip hop music group he was a bit lower at
58.32 and a standard deviation of 14 412.
Methodology
For making
this journal, we perform the method of collecting journal of the internet. We
collect three journals discussed about the effect on listening music while
reading. From the three journals, we combine
to make a new journal beside on our mind. This journal is completed we made On Monday,
june 20th 2016 at 09.13 pm.
Result and Discussion
The result of our discussion is listening instrument music is very good (effective) if we do it while reading. And listening song (Hip hop) while reading is not effective because hip hop song has fast tempo, heavy bass beats in the something we would consider high intensity and its so exhausting.
Upon
completion of this experiment, the music type did have significant effects on
the reading comprehension performance of an individual, but further studies are
needed to confidently determine if heart rate, and mean brain activity, and
beta wave frequency were also significantly affected by music genre.
Conclusion And Implication
The main
goal of the study is to compare the variables of classical and hip hop music to
determine which type of background music creates the most amount of
interference and which type of background music creates the least amount of
interference.
In
conclusion, it more research and testing must be done to say for certain
different music types have an effect on individuals reading comprehension. The
participants were told to ignore the background music during the reading
comprehension task, the distraction effect occurs not because the participants
were listening to the music classical music, but because the attention was
unconsciously being “drained” from the participants. This could be a new type
of interference in the limited capacity theory called the attention drainage
effect.
